Aussie Rules: AFLW Week 3 Recap: Sydney vs GSW

Written by Jake Bowtell (@thejbse on Twitter)

The GWS Giants emerged from the first ever AFLW Sydney derby match, despite a tireless effort from the expansion team Swans.

It was clear early on that while Sydney had plenty of appetite for the contest around the ground, GWS had access to a level of skill and class that the Swans have not yet had time to develop. The Giants increased their lead at every change of ends, up by 20 at the end of the first, 25 at half time, 37 after the 3rd, to run out 9.11.65 – 2.6.18 winners. The victory was established on the back of a +76 disposal count, with the Giants leading +23 in contested possessions and +4 for marks inside 50.

After being held goalless last weekend, Irish Giant Cora Staunton bounced back to kick 2 goals from 11 disposals, while Nicola Barr and Zarlie Goldsworthy also kicked a pair of goals each. GWS were well served around the ground by Alyce Parker (22 disposals, 5 marks, 3 tackles), while Emily Pease had a dynamic day out with 16 disposals, 3 marks, 7 tackles and a goal. For the Swans it was Molly Eastman who led them with 15 disposals and 4 tackles, while Bridie Kennedy was tireless in laying a team-high 6 tackles.

Next week: The Giants have the opportunity to get back to a .500 record when they host the West Coast Eagles at Giants Stadium next Saturday morning, while the Swans travel to Alberton Oval to take on fellow expansion side the Port Adelaide Power.
