Collingwood clung on to a 5 point win in a brutal clash with the Cats down at Kardinia Park, to move to 3-0 on the season and an equal-share in 1st place on the ladder.
Right from the outset the match between the two undefeated teams was played at a blistering pace, with Collingwood intent to move the ball quickly at all costs, and the Cats more than happy to apply elite levels of pressure all over the ground. The margin barely barely extended beyond one score all afternoon, as fans were treated to a true heavyweight arm wrestle. In the end it was a little bit of experience and shrewdness that allowed the Pies to withstand a ferocious final term from Geelong, who couldn’t quite convert their chances.
Georgie Prespakis continued her phenomenal start to the season for the Cats with 18 disposals and a game-high 9 tackles. Amy McDonald (19 disposals and 7 tackles) and Becky Webster (19 disposals, 2 marks, 2 tackles) feasted on the ruck work of Olivia Fuller (20 hit outs and 5 tackles) who has grown in leaps and bounds through 3 weeks. For Collingwood it was the efforts of Mikala Cann (17 disposals, 3 marks, 6 tackles), Chloe Molloy (15 disposals, 3 marks, 2 tackles) and experienced defender Stacey Livingstone that won the day.
Next week: The Cats travel to University of Tasmania Stadium to take on a 1-2 Kangaroos team in what figures to be a hotly contested matchup, while Collingwood hosts reigning champs the Adelaide Crows at Victoria Park.
I hope you enjoyed another weekend of awesome AFLW action, I’ll be back in a few days to preview all of the Week 4 action for you on A Football World!
